If someone had told me years ago that in my 60's I'd begin putting myself out there on a professional basis to teach people how to microdose "magic"mushrooms, I would have said they were crazy(!).

But "life gets lifey," as a mentor of mine, Annie Grace says. And the game changes.

When I learned that adopting a thoughtful practice of taking tiny, sub-threshold doses of a little mushroom could change my life for the better—I got curious. Then I sought-out someone to teach me how.

I've been a Massage Therapist, Small Publisher, Website Designer, and for 20 years, I steeped myself in the excitement of Festival Production and Event Management. My work always had a huge amount of life in it, but there was a point when the intensity became too much and the weight of life's inevitable challenges began to drain me. Eventually I burned out, wrestled with depression and anxiety, and adopted alcohol as a way to cope. This, and the sadness of walking my mother home in the last six years of her life and witnessing my sister suffer with illness, led to a deep, inner spiral downward.

I was at a tipping point when a dear friend of mine told me about microdosing psilocybin mushrooms. He said that taking these mushrooms with awareness and intent could help with addiction and depression. He also said that microdosing could help me perceive the world differently—which spoke to me. He told me about Michael Pollan's 2018 book, How to Change Your Mind: What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression, and Transcendence.

This was the beginning.

The Universe is The Magic, You Are The Magician

Slowly and steadily I began to research. As I did this, it became clear that I had found my way into an corner of the information multiverse that was filled with curiosity and life. I needed this inspiration more than I can express in words. Highly respected people were discussing, studying and applying psychedelics for healing—with surprisingly positive results. I listened and learned. There were podcasts, books, films and groundbreaking studies.

I came across The Microdosing Institute in the Netherlands and their primary consultant, Stanford trained psychologist, Dr. James Fadiman. Already a veteran psychedelic researcher and writer, in 2010, Fadiman began to get curious about the effects of tiny doses of psychedelics applied over time. He started-off by gathering reports from people he knew. With the help of Sophia Korb, the research expanded exponentially. Today, thousands of people have taken part in their citizen science project. With the help of the reports, Fadiman developed dosage ranges, protocols, do's and don't's ...and more (all of which can be found in his new book, co-authored with Jordan Gruber, Microdosing for Health, Healing and Enhanced Performance).

Somewhere in the midst of this, I learned that there were microdosing coaches, people who taught others how to microdose somewhere along the lines of what Fadiman had developed. This was perfect, just what I'd been looking for. I didn't want to microdose randomly, I wanted direction based on experience.  My goal was long-term healing, and if this "microdosing thing" worked or didn't work, I wanted to know I had given it's best chance. I found a coach.

With Her Wisdom and Generous Support
I Walked Through a New Door

My life began to change, slowly and steadily. I was feeling more grounded, resilient, and aligned with my inner guidance. I was observing life in a new way, a subtle lift that allowed me to come from a wiser, steadier place inside.

I also sensed a closer connection to spirit and the natural world. The Mazatec people of Mexico refer to psilocybe mushrooms as Los Niños Santos, conscious entities capable of communicating wisdom and healing. I felt this as well. I felt connected to and held by something larger than me. And I began giving the mushrooms the same respect as the Mazatec people do, and as so many other indigenous cultures have done with their spiritual medicines for thousands of years.

Synchronicity began to bubble. New possibilities began to appear. As my inner world changed, my outer world changed too. Lifestyle changes that seemed impossible to make before became possible—including alcohol (see This Naked Mind,  Resources). Daily life was still daily life, but there were profound inner shifts. I finally found a meditation practice that worked for me, and the kind community that came with it. And slowly, I began to move again, returning to my old practices of gentle Qi Gong and dance. I was healing, coming home and into harmony again.

As I look back, I know that what I had prayed for in my darkest moments during those rough years was answered. The mushrooms weren't just "magic pills" that took away my pain, nor were they a panacea for everything that ailed me. Their magic was deeper than that. They brought me coherence and connection. They gave me the ability to change, to be open to new possibilities and to let in my good.

  • Increased synchronicity

  • Grounding, centering

  • Coherence

  • Stronger inner guidance

  • Deeper connection to spirit, nature and others

  • New possibilities emerge

  • Drawn to making healthier lifestyle choices

  • Ability to let in the good

One of the most interesting things about psilocybin is that it's non-addictive. In fact, most people who have had a microdosing practice for a period of time, lower their dose. And over time, may take less often or for some, not at all—because the shift has been made.

There is most certainly magic in these mushrooms, what it is may forever remain a mystery. But I like mystery, especially if it brings wonder. If I can share anything with you, it would be that; to see the world anew, be inspired again, and come home to your truest power—to change your mind and come into your heart.

“And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.”
— Roald Dahl

⭐ In addition to my personal experience with microdosing, my ongoing curiosity in the subject and an immersion program with The Microdosing Institute, I am now certified as a Microdosing Guide thanks to Kayse Gehret's Microdosing for Healing Professional Facilitator Certification Program. I am also a member of her Professional Mentorship Program, where she brings together other professionals in the field for ongoing networking and learning.
